Netflix has started blocking more users, proxies, and VPN services that allowed Canadian subscribers to stream US content.Netflix Inc. began its crackdown operation on customers who were using VPN services to access its platform. The streaming giant, after facing immense pressure from the content license owners, decided to stop users from geo jumping to stream content not available for them.
According to The Guardian, the US streaming business has banned the VPN services and other proxies which the Canadian streaming viewers were using to access the US library. Canadian users have shown outrage on this crackdown operation by the company.
The Guardian adds that the users are upset after the company finally blocks the proxies, servers, and VPNs that allowed them to geo jumping. Netflix is reportedly doing well on its pledge that stated not to allow the streaming subscribers to watch content that is not available for them. All Netflix customers including the ones living in Canada want to get their hands on the far superior US Netflix content in order to stream the online movies or TV shows not available in their domestic plans.
It is not on the streaming service provider to design the catalog for each country. The rights and permissions come directly from the license owners who actually own the content. Customers complained that while they pay the same price for the streaming plans, they have less content on the service. One website showed estimates that the Canadian streaming subscribers have access to stream nearly 4,000 TV shows and movies roughly, whereas the US library has 7,000.
For that matter, the trend of using proxies and VPN started to get common so that the customers can easily bypass the virtual geographical boundary. It indeed is annoying that US has a far more superior content catalog than any other region in the world. Hence, the users want to access content that is not locally available to them.
In January, Netflix announced to begin operations that will help it in blocking users who are involved in such activities. It seems like the company now has full enforcement to carry forward with its plan and the results can be seen from the users who are outraged on different social media platforms.
Different users took this blockade to Twitter. One of them, known as @Sethalos, said that NFLX service and content library in Canada is terrible. He added, “So what other choice do you have other than Torrent.” He referenced using different Torrent applications that would actually help him in downloading any TV show or movie, however, illegally.
Another Twitter user with the handle name of @mrmitchclarke wrote in his tweet that he would stop using the video streaming service if this continues.
It really is a cat and mouse game between the VPN services and Netflix as one moment the company would feel it is winning the battle but VPN services would make sure to come up with a better idea to bypass its service without being identified.
