Samsung is automatically disabling the windows update on the machines sold to the users.
In recent times, Samsung Electronics started to sell personal computers to the masses. However, it is now believed that the company is quietly and actively working on to disable any Windows Update in the computer that it sells at least. The MVP of Microsoft, Patrick Barker, found out about this problem and later wrote a blog post in order to address the users of personal computer purchased from Samsung.
Mr. Patrick Barker is only helping a few users out to troubleshoot problems with their Samsung Galaxy machines. It is believed that the notification of Windows Update came to all users but disabled automatically and randomly. However, the Microsoft’s Auditpol utility found out about this issue and addressed it further to Samsung’s SW Update software.
Moreover, the company was playing games from the backend, where it’s update tool was downloading and running a file named ‘Disable_Windowsupdate.exe’ automatically on users’ machines. This application, which was downloaded directly from the company’s end, proved to be a loophole for a user that wished to update windows eventually.
The Korean giant explains it update tool as, “You can install relevant software for your computer easier and faster using SW Update. The SW Update program helps you install and update your software and driver easily.” To be precise, the Samsung’s SW Update Software is said to be a kind of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) tool, which ships with the machine in order to keep the hardware and software updated. This also updates a few third-party software.
Venture Beat reported, “Barker found Disable_Windowsupdate.exe is configured to load automatically regardless of how Windows is set to start up. He also found that SW Update downloads the executable in question as part of a zip file from Samsung’s website and that its digital certificate is signed by Samsung. As Barker rightly points out, there is one major difference between Samsung’s update tool and that of other OEMs: SW Update disables Windows Update.”
The executable file will work on the machine that will have Windows XP or higher installed on it. Language settings can also play an integral role. It is unknown yet about how many Samsung’s update tools are downloaded and activated the ‘Disable_Windowsupdate.exe’ file on its machines. It is all done automatically and the users are helpless to defend their machines from it.
This can prove to be injurious to company’s reputation, as its users are unable to control and act promptly.
